The research in the laboratory is relevant to applications of various plasma systems and analysis of astrophysical data. Space Physics at Dartmouth consists of experimental and theoretical research. In the Plasma Laboratory, we study processes in plasmas subjected to high. Magnetohydrodynamics simulations are used to account for the non-equilibrium kinetic and transport processes in the plasmas. This book builds on the fluid and kinetic theory of equilibria and waves presented in a companion textbook, Basic Space Plasma Physics (by the same authors). Theoretical analysis of the experimental data is based on detailed modeling of atomic physics processes that govern the atomic/ionic spectral line broadening, atomic level splitting under electric and magnetic fields, field ionization, multiple ionization and time-dependent collisional-radiative calculations. These concepts are inherent in contemporary plasma-based accelera-tor schemes, and thus provide a foundation for the more advanced expositions that follow in this volume. The diagnostic methods are based on fast high-resolution plasma spectroscopy of spontaneous emission in the region from visible to x-rays and spectroscopy of laser absorption and laser-stimulated emission. These notes are intended to provide a brief primer in plasma physics, intro-ducing common denitions, basic properties, and typical processes found in plasmas. The use of the hot and dense plasmas for x-ray lasers and the use of intense x-ray sources for high-resolution microscopy of living biological cells are considered as well. Plasmas consist of an ionized gas containing roughly equal parts of electrons and ions and are created either by heating gases to high temperatures, bombarding. Implication of the development of plasma switches, intense x-ray sources, generation of electron and ion beams, and industrial applications based on plasma-surface interaction are studied. We examine the interaction of non-equilibrium plasmas with strong electric and magnetic fields, the propagation of ionization fronts, the production of fast particle beams, generation of magnetic shocks, development of collective fluctuating fields, and plasma-surface interactions. In the Plasma Laboratory, we study processes in plasmas subjected to high energy deposition. These notes are intended to provide a brief primer in plasma physics, introducing common definitions, basic properties, and typical processes found in. ![]()

![]() In non-mammalian vertebrates such as birds, lost hair cells are replaced by residual supporting cells that transdifferentiate into new sensory receptors either directly or after undergoing division 6. The auditory and vestibular sensory epithelia of all vertebrates possess only two major cell types: supporting cells, which play homeostatic and architectural roles, and mechanosensitive hair cells. One prominent example of a mammalian organ with poor regenerative capacity is the inner ear 4, 5. In other instances, such as central nervous and cardiac-muscle tissues, cells exhibit little or no potential for regeneration after injury 1– 3. Regeneration occurs either by activation and amplification of resident stem cells, as in the epithelia of the skin and intestine, or through cellular de-differentiation and proliferation, as in the liver. Some adult mammalian tissues retain a gradually declining regenerative capability. Initiated in response to injury, regeneration is a complex process that can restore the structure and function of damaged tissue. Our results suggest that the pharmacological inhibition of Lats kinases may promote initial stages of the proliferative regeneration of hair cells, a process thought to be permanently suppressed in the adult mammalian inner ear. RNA sequencing indicates that the inhibitor reversibly activates the expression of transcriptional Yap targets: upon withdrawal, a subset of supporting-cell progeny exits the cell cycle and upregulates genes characteristic of sensory hair cells. The substance prevents Yap phosphorylation and induces proliferation of supporting cells in the murine inner ear, murine cardiomyocytes, and human Müller glia in retinal organoids. ![]() In vitro kinase assays show that the compound acts as an ATP-competitive inhibitor of Lats kinases-the core enzymes in Hippo signaling. Using a high-throughput phenotypic screen, we identified a potent and non-toxic activator of Yap. Hippo signaling is an evolutionarily conserved pathway that restricts growth and regeneration predominantly by suppressing the activity of the transcriptional coactivator Yap. ![]() ![]() ![]() Please refer to our size guide for your perfect fitĪnd like the majority of our tees, they're not supplied in plastic bags. During this lockout, it’s up to you to navigate the labyrinthine passages that connect all these disparate lives and find your son along the way. While that was a novel, interesting backdrop for the game last time, it has since taken on a rather more ominous meaning given the current state of the world. The lockdown system was implemented to combat the Nanophage, a pandemic that affected those with tech implants, and accidentally triggers early in the game. The game takes place predominantly in a rather poor apartment block during a quarantine. The release’s use of color and digital displays get nice boosts from the PS5’s improved resolution and HDR, allowing the greens and blues that dominate the world to really pop. Where the game was once nice looking at the cost of performance, Observer: System Redux is able to have its cake and eat it, too. The game runs at a pretty stable 60 frames-per-second now, and many of the assets have been completely overhauled. Performance is one of the standouts this time. This time, however, Observer: System Redux provides the complete opposite experience to that. The game failed to hit 30 frames-per-second for almost the entire experience, and we ran into at least half a dozen game-breaking bugs. One of the biggest problems with the title on its initial release was its performance. The core narrative kind of lets his character down, but more on that later. He gives it his all, giving the weathered, exhausted detective an impressive degree of nuance. Hauer was one of the best things about the PS4 version of the game, and that remains true here. Lazarski’s role was that of a titular Observer, a detective, with a Dream Eater neural interface that allows him to investigate people’s minds. ![]() The good news is that many of the issues the game had previously have actually been stamped out, making for a vastly improved experience.Īs a quick refresher for those that haven’t thought about the title in a while, you assume the role of Krakow Police Detective Daniel Lazarski, voiced by the now sadly passed away Rutger Hauer, as he tries to locate his estranged son in a dystopian cyberpunk suburb in Poland. The bad news is the very same writer that many of you have taken umbrage with over Observer’s PS4 review is back. This time around, we have some bad news for you and some good news. It was an experience that was maybe a little too bloated and more importantly it was absolutely littered with technical problems that made playing it a chore. Then with the advent of computers, Carl Zeiss was able to add computer-assisted controlled systems to planetariums and incorporate fiber optics to depict the night sky in greater detail. The Model 1 (as it became known) was permanently installed within the German Museum in 1925.Īs technology advanced through the years the Model 1 gave way to later models that became smaller in size. ![]() ![]() Following the conclusion of WW1 in March 1919, the chief design engineer for the Carl Zeiss Company (and later director) hit upon the idea of using a dark room and projecting the night sky using light.įollowing several years of trials and development of mechanical devices in August 1923 an artificial sky was lit up inside for the very first time. In order to bring this idea to life they sought out the help of Carl Zeiss who owned a company that produced microscopes and other optical instruments. They wanted to create an apparatus that would show the apparent motions of the sun, moon, planets, and stars. However, it wasn’t until 1913 that the founder of the Deutsches Museum (German Museum) in Munich, Oskar von Miller, and astronomer and privy counsellor Max Wolf had an idea for a new kind of planetarium. One of the planets contained a small lightbulb which then cast a shadow across the other two objects. Hindermann in Basel it comprised of two planets revolving around a central sun. Known as the Orbitoscope and created by Professor E. Over the years improvements by Ptolemy, the creation of the Gottorp Globe, then the Gororro Sphere and the Atwood Globe brought the dream closer.Īt the beginning of the twentieth century the first device for projecting the planetary motions was developed. Archimedes developed the first device that showed the planetary motions. The dream of being able to accurately project the night sky inside a room is millennia old. A Short History of Planetarium Projectors So which projector should you choose? Well, I’ve gathered together the best 20 that will help you up your astrophotography game to help easily find the right one for you. If you have access to a star planetarium projector you have access to the night sky whenever is convenient to you making learning the location of the stars a much quicker process. If you then have to spend half the night trying to figure out where in the sky the thing that you are trying to photograph is, you could be missing out on great shots. Depending on where you live, getting the right conditions may mean having to travel and/or wait for the weather to be on your side. This is why more and more astrophotographers are turning to star planetarium projectors, as they allow you to learn the locations of the stars and the setup of the night sky before you’ve even taken your camera out of its bag.Īstrophotography is reliant on dark, clear skies. Just like any type of photography, understanding the scene and subject matter that you are photographing enables you to capture better images. Astrophotography is one of those types of photography that when done right can produce some stunning photos. ![]() |
